June 13, 1942 – United States Forms The OSS

Franklin Delano Roosevelt formally established the Office of Strategic Services on June 13, 1942. Before the creation of the OSS, American intelligence gathering had been disorganized and ineffective. The OSS was formed to collect and analyze strategic information required by the Joint Chiefs of Staff and to conduct special operations not assigned to other agencies.
